American Sniper Poster Analysis

Analysis of American Sniper Poster

The American Sniper poster immediately identifies what the feature is about and also what style of genre it is, (in this case Action). The bold typography which is located in the centre of the poster is very striking in the fact that it catches the attention of the observer and subliminally forces them to read the name of the feature. In addition the sub text below 'The most lethal sniper in US history' is especially effective due to the fact that the word 'lethal' signifies violence and danger which identifies that the contents of the feature isn't perhaps for those who are light-hearted. Also in 'US history' highlights the possibility that historic events may take place within the feature and gives tempting hints to the narrative and plot of the film.

The main object featured on the poster is Bradley Cooper dressed in a soldiers uniform with a certain facial expression which presents his character as a strong person who has values but also stands for more than just what he does but what he represents. The use of such an actor as Bradley Cooper is a major factor as due to such large casting members, they will bring a much larger target audience with them as fans of the actors themselves. Although the majority of the poster is painted in black and white, the American flag is coloured to perfection with its bold, striking red, white and blue. The flag itself is used to suggest and symbolise patriotism, loyalty, respect and ultimately valour. This is crucial to the design of the poster.

Overall, although the poster may present itself to be quite simple in terms of its design and aesthetic appearance, the content of the poster provides enough techniques and methods to portray what the audience can expect out of the feature and what style (genre) of film they can expect when the go to see it.
