Semiotics

Semiotics

Semiotics is the analysis and study of signs. Signs are the aspect of certain media language that the audience retrieves the most information from without even knowing it. For example: sound, lighting (colours), attire, facial expressions etc.

Signifier and Signified are two separate aspects of semiotics.

The Signifier is know as the denotation which in simple terms means what you can physically hear and see as part of the audience.
The Signified is the message that is connoted through you sub-conciously and is the impact that it has on you as the view.

As semiotics can be used in all genres of media text it is important that as a director and producer of an opening scene I consider all aspect of semiotics including: lighting, sound, facial expressions and attire etc.

Taken is a great example where a variety of semiotics are used together to create a fast paced flowing opening sequence and has made great use of how they use facial expressions.
