Binary Opposition
Levi Strauss invented a theory that explained the oppositions between characters and in movies of the action and super hero genre in particular. The theory investigates how one of the protagonist 'hero' is often opposed by an antagonist 'villain'. Binary oppositions are when a protagonist and antagonist are seen within the same feature and the audience are aware that both characters obtain opposite views etc and have different objectives and goals.
Binary oppositions is commonly seen throughout films of the action and superhero genre even to this present day. The 'good vs evil' concept is now expected within action and superhero films and often leads to a features success. If a feature has a memorable villain and hero then the popularity of the feature will in result increase audience and public interest.
It is important that I understand this theory due to the fact that as my opening sequence is of the action genre I will have to follow various codes and conventions in order to create a successful opening sequence that will appeal to the audience and avoid any controversy if I were to break any expectations.
